h.nouveau… New Beginning in the Free State Branch

nouveau

Monique Strydom was invited as guest speaker at the Annual General Meeting of the branch in 2005. She became so inspired by what she saw that she, her husband, Alice Art and TUKS Rag (University of Pretoria) “adopted” our Residential Care Facility and oh what a difference they made. The project is called ‘h.nouveau’ which means ‘new beginning’.

This new beginning is giving the residents an improved home that started off with artists Cornelius Bosch and Glendine & Harry Erasmus helping the residents paint their own paintings for their flats. We saw new talents born within our residents that have made their self-image grow.

When the paintings were complete, the second phase of the project started. Callie, Monique and TUKS rag students started to renovate the flats. Kitchens were changed into bedrooms, new light fittings were installed and flat 6 was totally revamped, from painting to retiling of the bathroom and the provision of new bedding and ornaments. The residents are totally excited about their changing environment.

So far we have commitment for the renovation of another 8 flats thanks to the wide media coverage we received. This included an insert on the TV programme InPas and an article in Finesse magazine!! We still need sponsors for 3 flats.

Our thanks go to the Callie & Monique Strydom Charity Trust, Callie & Monique personally, Alice Pitzer of Alice Art, the staff of InPas and Finesse, Hybrid Electrical and the artists for making the lives of our residents ‘brighter by the day’.

NEW BUILDING – NGWATHE MUNICIPALITY

The Ngwathe Municipality at a recent council meeting approved the use of a building they are renovating in Mokwallo. This will be the new home for our Day Care Centre for Children with Disabilities and will become a satellite office of our branch of Epilepsy South Africa from which we will organise our NDA Food Security Project. The granting of the use of this building is an acknowledgement of the commitment of the Ngwathe Municipality towards people with Disabilities and the role that our branch plays in supporting people with all disabilities. Thank you Ngwathe Municipality!

DEVELOPMENT - NORTH WEST BRANCH

An exciting development is the establishment of a local committee for our Vryburg office. The plan is that this satelite office will become an independant branch of Epilepsy SA in 2009!!
