The first residential care centre for people with epilepsy was established in Springs during 1973. It was realised, at the time, that a certain percentage of school leavers and members of the general population living with epilepsy could not cope in the open labour market, but that they could function in a protected environment. As the need increased another centre was established at Daggafontein in 1980. The East Rand and Johannesburg protective workshops were established to provide protective employment to people with epilepsy and/or other disabilities who cannot function in the open labour market. The workshops also form part of our poverty alleviation and rehabilitation programme. The Stimulation Centre ensures that people with epilepsy and other disabilities develop to their full potential.
